I don’t typically travel with the hope of skiing deep snow. I’m usually more enthralled by the prospect of “skiing the terrain”, or moving around, high in the mountains, with little to no fresh snow and skis on my feet without the associated worries that come with avalanches. However, when it snows this much, you’ve just gotta ski. Because, this is never not FUN. . So, as it happens, this is my favorite picture from my annual trip to Chamonix. As deep and fluffy as it ever gets in this part of the world, I assume. And, I was stoked to pull the camera out to capture the skimo man of the year @joelevans gobbling up the fruits of a 1 meter fluke storm just three days after skiing on the flanks of Mont Blanc in perfect spring conditions. Even if they were just 1,500ft laps, they were all human powered, and great to add to the mix of terrain and conditions on this trip. A real highlight. To say the least. . Also, big thanks to Joel and Lauren for hosting me on this trip. By the way, Joel is about to fulfill his human-powered dreams by hitting 100,00 meters or roughly 330,000 feet of climbing for the ski season. Pretty damn good for a guy working a full-time job! Oh, and, yeah, he’s vegan. No correlation to vertical meters gained though. #liveforthemoment . @backcountry #chaseyourgoat

We live in an interesting time. Entertainment streams 24/7 on your computer, tablet, or phone. You and I are offered a continual cascade of distraction that steals your attention and takes you farther from natural spaces. . It seems in many instances the phone and all the other entertainment devices we have just become replacements for action, or more simply put, just going outside and playing. . This distancing, in my opinion, has created a space where the delicate and meaningful symbiosis between humans and nature has been deeply disturbed. Cast aside for a society completely lost to over digitization and fantasy. A place based entirely on illusions like the necessity to accumulate excess material possessions, amount wealth, even at the expense of our planet and it’s health and the people on it for the purpose of financial security and comfort. In this overly digitized world it’s easier, more convenient, and for many, just down right better to grab a phone then go for a walk in a park, or climb a mountain. The fact that I have to use this platform for a means to an end could be considered a sad case in point if it were not for the ability to choose what kind of messaging I want to portray to you all who take the time to listen. . So, like I said, we live in an interesting time. And, what I want to comment on here today is a curiosity I have about the utter and very apparent lack of connection that seems to exist out there between us (humans) and our natural world. One that is robbing each and every one of us who doesn’t take time to get outside and more or less harmonize with nature a chance to gain new experiences that will project you forward. . The point is that there is so much more to human experience than what you see on TV or on your phone. The point is that we were meant to explore these wild and awe inspiring places because they promote growth. And, a life void of growth, what is that even? You don’t have to wait until your financially secure, or retired to do it. You just need to don the courage to step outside your front door. . Without our natural world, my life would be void of almost all inspiration and meaning. What would it be like for you?

It’s hard to tell if I’m smiling or just drooling all over myself here in this photo. Perhaps because the line between enjoying the pain of training and it actually being truly painful is blurrier than one might imagine. Or, that there is enjoyment in the struggle. If there wasn’t, would there be a point to it all? . After spending most of my winter rebuilding my aerobic capacity on the wintery roads of Colorado, and occasionally going uphill on the slopes when my sore foot allowed, it’s been nice to finally take it back to the mountains. I wouldn’t say the conditions in Chamonix are allowing for deep and wild trail running experiences at the moment, nor is the snow ideal for short term goals. However, this valley does continually allow me to utilize a large majority of the mountain skill set I’m set on building for distant projects, regardless of environmental conditions. . It’s conceivable that for those of you who don’t ground yourself in training as a mechanism to make you better able to do what you love that it doesn’t make tons of sense what I’m doing. The process of working with a coach, planning workouts for months in advance and actually having the self-regulation to follow through and execute on those programs with consistency day after day as precisely as possible may not be understandable. And, that’s ok. I could after all just go ski a Vallee Blanche and call it a vacation. . But, the key to doing what you love to do, and doing it well, is taking stake in the process that gets you there. It’s what you do everyday, piece by piece that makes you stronger and more prepared to take advantage of the opportunities you have when they present themselves. The point is never to get so immersed in the process that you cease to recognize those opportunities but to be ready and available when they arrive. . Undoubtedly these rules hold true in whatever you choose to do with your time. A lot of the days might look a little like this, a half smile, a bit of drool, but you manage a little smile because you know full well you’re putting the time in and that momentary discomfort is just that. Momentary. #liveforthemoment @swordperformance #pushyourboundaries

Small world, big mountains. Great to be back exploring in the Chamonix valley again. Feels like home away from home at this point, but without the boredom that comes with hyper familiarity and routine.
