Hellenic Petroleum (Helpe) refinery, Aspropyrgos, Greece. Aspropyrgos is the name for the Municipality, and more widely used as the name for the industrialised part of the Thriasian Plain, hosting some of Greece’s major industrial facilities, such as its largest oil refineries and steel mills. It translates as ‘White Tower’. The municipality is 15km NW of Athens, home to truck repair workshops, scrapyards, freight termini and Roma encampments.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣If you want to LEARN MORE about how I shoot assignments like this at night, sign up for a course I’m giving in Cortona, Italy next month ( 11-14 July 2019) – more details here: tinyurl.com/y6ct6nl8⁣⁣ ⁣@simonnorfolkstudio @michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #documentary #Greece #Aspropyrgos #industry #industrialised #petroleumrefinery #ThriasianPlain #masterclas s #nightphotography #cotm2019 #cortonaonthemove⁣ ⁣

Here’s Europe’s newest frontier. After BREXIT there will be many more crossings between the UK and the continent of Europe in the north of Ireland than in the whole of the rest of the EU. Some ‘crossings’ are no more than a plank across a stream or a gap in a hedge. They could build a fence, but last time there was a hard border here, there were decades of shootings and bombings. Over rural Ireland hang Brexit’s darkest clouds. ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣An unpublished personal project. ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣@simonnorfolkstudio @michaelhoppengallery ⁣ ⁣@benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #documentary #historical #ireland #northernireland #brexit #unitedkingdom #EU #hardborder #irishborder #eire

Another image from my recent assignment for the Wellcome Trust on the 17th century bubonic plague outbreak in Eyam, Derbyshire…⁣ ⁣⁣ Each year on ‘Plague Sunday’, at the end of August, residents of Eyam in Derbyshire in the north of England mark the bubonic plague epidemic that devastated their small rural community in the years 1665–6. They wear the traditional costume of the day and attend a memorial service to remember how half the village sacrificed themselves to avoid spreading the disease further. The plague outbreak in the Derbyshire village of Eyam, northern England, began in 1665 when a flea-infested bundle of cloth arrived from London for the local tailor. Within a week his assistant George Viccars was dead and more began dying in the household soon after. As the disease spread, the villagers turned for leadership to their rector, the Rev. William Mompesson, and Puritan Minister, Thomas Stanley. In an act of tremendous bravery they decided to quarantine the entire village to prevent further spread of the disease to neighbouring communities. The Plague in Eyam raged for 14 months and claimed the lives of at least 260, over one third of the population.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Here photographed: The Riley Graves, a walled enclosure on the outskirts of Eyam, holds the bodies of Elizabeth Hancock’s husband and six children, all of whom died within eight days of each other. Because of the high risk of infecting her neighbours she had the traumatic task of dragging the bodies from her farmhouse and burying them herself. ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Read more on this story, just published on the Wellcome Collection website, here: https://wellcomecollection.org/articles/XO0I9RAAAGo8a2St⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Follow me @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material on this and future projects⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣@simonnorfolkstudio @wellcomecollection @michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #documentary #historical #plague #england #derbyshire #unitedkingdom #Eyam #bubinicplague #epidemic #1666 #sacrifice #WellcomeTrust #blackdeath ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Thanks to Jamie Marshall / @tribaleye for assistance with supplemental lighting.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣

On this day (6th June) in 1944 … Gold, commonly known as Gold Beach, was the code name for one of the five areas of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France in the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. Taking Gold was to be the responsibility of the British Army, with sea transport, mine sweeping, and a naval bombardment force provided by the Royal Navy as well as elements from the Dutch, Polish and other Allied navies. The objectives at Gold were to secure a beachhead, move west to capture Arromanches and establish contact with the US Forces at Omaha, capture Bayeux and the small port at Port-en-Bessin, and to link up with the Canadian Forces at Juno to the east.On D-Day at Gold, naval bombardment got underway at 05:30, and amphibious landings commenced at 07:25.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Here a photograph of Gold Beach, near Arromanches-les-Bains, Normandy⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Follow @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣@michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti @thephotosociety #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #dday #d-day #goldbeach #alliedinvasion #ww2 #Normandy #beach #secondworldwar #history #war #landing #warfare #liberation #1944 #june1944 #asnelles #normandylandings #BritishArmy #germanoccupiedfrance⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣

Great news being shortlisted for the 2019 Wellcome Photography prize ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Shroud, Rhône Glacier, 2018, Simon Norfolk and Klaus Thymann⁣ AN exhibition of this work opens this week at the Museum of Natural History in Vienna, Austria (5 June - 1 September 2019): “MELTDOWN: A Visualisation of Climate Change by Project Pressure” ⁣⁣ ⁣“In the Rhône glacier in the Swiss Alps, a family runs an ice grotto as a popular tourist attraction. But, as the Earth warms, the glacier is shrinking and the grotto is under threat – an unusual example of how climate change imperils people’s livelihoods. In response, the family has covered part of the glacier with white geosynthetic blankets to reflect away the sun’s heat and keep the cold in. This slows the shrinkage, but it is only a small-scale, temporary fix.”⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Read more in the Guardian here: ⁣ ⁣www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2019/jun/01/2019-wellcome-photography-prize-entries⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Follow me @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material on this and future projects⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣@simonnorfolkstudio @klausthymann @projectpressure @galleryluisotti @michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #rhoneglacier #Switzerland #shroud #climatechange #change #globalwarming #pyrograph s#greenpeace #savetheplanet #lowlight #light  #spectral #death #sepulchral  #haunting #apocalypse #ice #icemelt #icegrotto #projectpressure #alps #swissalps #glaciers ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Shroud, Rhône Glacier, 2018, Image by Simon Norfolk and Klaus Thymann.⁣ ⁣

A short cycle from Brighton, England, standing on the South Downs with views of the Sussex Weald, stand the Clayton Windmills, locally known as Jack & Jill. Built in 1821, Jill, a post mill with a two-storey roundhouse, was moved from her original location in Dyke Road, Hove, to Clayton in 1852. She has four Patent Sails and is winded by a five-blade fantail mounted on the tailpole. The wind-shaft is wooden, with a cast iron poll end. The working life of the windmills ended in 1906 /08. Jill was restored in 1978 and ground flour again in 1986. During the Great Storm the following year, the mill’s sails were set in motion with the brake on, setting fire to the mill. Some members of the Windmill Society were able to get to the mill and save her. Today, Jill is still in working order and open to the public most Sundays between May and September. She produces stone-ground organic wholemeal flour on an occasional basis, the majority of which is sold to visitors.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Follow me @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material on this and future projects⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣@simonnorfolkstudio @michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #iphonephoto #jack&jill #sussex #windmill #documentary #historical #machinery #england #southdownsnationalpark #unitedkingdom #countryside⁣ ⁣

From the archives: The bombed, burned and looted Ministry of Planning, Baghdad, Iraq, April 2003.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Thousands took part in the looting in Baghdad, which began on 9 April 2003, the day Saddam Hussein’s government ceased to function. Not only were government ministries targeted, as well as the homes of the Ba’athist elite, but public institutions vital to Iraqi society, including schools, hospitals, and food distribution centres. According to a subsequent report in the Washington Post, after the US military reopened two bridges across the Tigris River to civilian traffic, “the immediate result was that looters raced across and extended their plundering to the Planning Ministry (here photographed) and other buildings that had been spared.”⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Follow me @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material on this and future projects⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣@simonnorfolkstudio @michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #iraq #battlefield #war #aftermath #documentary #lensculture #visualarchitects #exhibition #photograph #ministryofplanning #baghdad #looted #infrastructure #battle⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣
