Photo by @BabakTafreshi | On this late evening in March 2012 I was waiting for the moon to align with Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris, as it was setting over Arc de Triomphe (Etoile). We are so used to the moon presence that often forget its cosmic identity. How bizarre it is to see another world so easily and strikingly in the sky, from 400,000 km away. For a car traveling nonstop at 100km/hr highway speed it takes 6 months to travel the distance. This month 50 years ago Apollo 11 astronauts traveled 3 days in space to reach the moon and prepare for the first ever landing on July 20, 1969. Photo by @andrea_frazzetta | Guatemala, Tikal. The Temple Number V appears in the middle of the forest. Tikal was a capital of the Maya world in ancient times, and it’s easy to believe when you’re confronted with the thousands of massive pyramids, plazas, temples, and dwellings that remain today. Tikal National Park encompasses 575 square kilometres of jungle and thousands of ruined structures. To see more photos from my travels, follow me @andrea_frazzetta #guatemala #tikal #mayans

Photo by @michaelclarkphoto | Frost on the trees at Kelland Pond just south of Twizel, New Zealand on the south island. While driving up to Aoraki (Mt. Cook) I saw these ghost trees on the side of the road and stopped to check them out. Upon realizing there was a frozen pond and I was inside a low lying cloud I pulled out the camera and spent an hour or so photographing the amazingly moody landscape. #twizel #kellandpond #newzealand

Photo by @stephen_matera | Wind blown sand across Great Sand Dunes National Park at sunset, Colorado. The area receives only 11 inches of precipitation each year and was measured to be the quietest of the U.S. National Parks in the contiguous 48 states. The park also contains the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with six peaks over 13,000 feet. Sand temperatures can reach a blistering 140 degrees Fahrenheit during hot summer days and dunes are up to 750 feet high. Follow me @stephen_matera to see a video of the sand blowing and for more images like this from the Colorado and around the world. #desert #sangredecristomountains #colorado

Sponsored by @ExploreCanada // There's a man in Canada who is one of the only people on the planet who's learned to walk with polar bears. Following their tracks onto the ice would be a huge risk without him. See more of Canada's wildlife in @bertiegregory’s new online series “Wild_Life: The Big Freeze” available on National Geographic YouTube and at natgeo.com/wildlife.

Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz | A rare aerial view of Beni Isguen, the exquisitely preserved medieval city in the Algerian Sahara. The pious non-Arabic Muslim inhabitants don’t allow photography inside the fortified city walls, and visitors have to wander the narrow footpaths with a local escort to insure that rule is respected. The rooftops are walled off to ensure privacy while sleeping outside in the cool night air. The triangular feature on the left is the town market. To view more of our world from above, follow @geosteinmetz. #Mzab #Ghardaïa #UNESCOWorldHeritage #paramotor #notadrone

Photo by @daisygilardini | I have been enjoying aerial photography immensely lately, as invariably it gives me a surprising new perspective. I’m always stunned how things look different from above! In this image, the bearded seals helps give a sense of place and scale to the design of the broken pack ice. Photo by @mborowick | Sometimes you have to fly to the top of mountains to find those beautiful craters that just so happen to have incredible natural wonders. Like this scene here, at the top of a mountain in Thorsmork, in Southern Iceland. #iceland #thorsmork #ice #cessna #explore

The road climbs to an elevation of almost 11,000 feet (3,352 meters) and the views from the top are amazing. Have you been? The valley is an important wildlife corridor for elk, moose, antelope, deer, wolverines, grizzly bears, wolves, and hundreds of bird species.
